Please read POCKET WATCH along with considering how much you hold the device against your ear. If a cell phone is your ONLY phone, please, for your health, get a headset or use in speakerphone mode.

The post IARC Raises its Concern over Cell Phone Radiation first appeared on insights.]]>Until today, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had said that there were no adverse health effects from the use of cell phones. The wireless industry, including the CTIA lobbying group, and the Federal Communications Commission and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have also long maintained that cell phones were safe.
In a report issued today, the IARC said it now lists mobile phone use in the same category as lead, gasoline engine exhaust, and chloroform. Officially, cell phone radiation is listed as a “carcinogenic hazard.” Download the IARC report here.
CNET has published a series of three articles which cover the issues very well. Here are the links:
In September, 2009, the connection had already been established between brain tumors and cell phone usage. At that time I wrote an article titled “Brain Tumors Solidly Linked to Cell Phone Usage“. The evidence has not changed. The danger is still there. What has changed is that this evidence has become more apparent. I would ask you to liken cell phone safety with driving safety; you fasten your seatbelt to reduce your chances of injury, and there are things you can do to reduce the health hazards from using a cell phone — these are listed in my article.

His latest report (accepted April 13, 2009 for publication in the International Journal of Oncology – available for download below) involving 905 cases with malignant brain tumors, 1,254 cases with benign tumors and 2,162 population-based controls provides irrefutable evidence solidly linking cordless phone usage to brain tumors.
Note that newer cordless phones may use DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) Technology. DECT may add yet more influences to the mix; here is an excerpt from “Medical warnings needed on DECT cordless phone use”, J. Aust. Coll. Nutr. & Env. Med. Vol. 25 No. 2 August 2006 (accepted for publication), Don Maisch, EMFacts Consultancy:
“Concerns within the German medical community led to the Freiburger Appeal in October 2002, signed by over 130 medical practitioners from the German environmental medicine medical organisation, Interdisziplinäre Gesellschaft für Umweltmedizin e. V. (IGUMED). The appeal was to express their concern over their medical observations of adverse health impacts from the use of both cell phones and DECT cordless phones. Symptoms were attributed to exposure to pulsed microwave radiation from cell phone and DECT technology. The following is an extract:
We have observed, in recent years, a dramatic rise in severe and chronic diseases among our patients, especially:
Moreover, we have observed an ever-increasing occurrence of various disorders, often misdiagnosed in patients as psychosomatic:
Since the living environment and lifestyles of our patients are familiar to us, we can see especially after carefully-directed inquiry a clear temporal and spatial correlation between the appearance of disease and exposure to pulsed high -frequency microwave radiation (HFMR), such as:
If you use a cordless phone regularly and substantially, it is imperative that you

The correlation between cordless phone usage and health problems as noted above is factual. In the case of brain tumors, there may be no indication for 5, 10, or more years, so you may be tempted to think you are not affected. The evidence strongly suggests YOU WILL BE AFFECTED, so please take appropriate action now to preserve your health.

L. Lloyd Morgan (Bioelectromagnetics Society, Electronics Engineer) along with seven co-authors, created this report to provide an unbiased release of health-risk information related to the use of cell phones.
The report concludes:
This report, sent to government leaders and media on August 25, 2009, details eleven design flaws of the 13-country, Telecom-funded Interphone study. The Interphone study, begun in 1999, was intended to determine the risks of brain tumors, but its full publication has been held up for years. Components of this study published to date reveal what the authors call a ‘systemic-skew’, greatly underestimating brain tumor risk.
The design flaws include categorizing subjects who used portable phones (which emit the same microwave radiation as cellphones,) as ‘unexposed’; exclusion of many types of brain tumors; exclusion of people who had died, or were too ill to be interviewed, as a consequence of their brain tumor; and exclusion of children and young adults, who are more vulnerable.
“In particular, the report’s purpose is to inform journalists and government officials of the
independent scientific findings that raise red flags, and also to address the design flaws in the Interphone study protocol that results in an underestimation of the risk of brain tumors from cellphone use. This report is fully referenced to enable further investigations and for detailed fact checking.”
If you are a regular user of a cellphone and you value your health, please take the time to fully understand this important issue, and what you can do to minimize your risk now. The idea is to keep the cellphone transmitter away from your body, especially your head. You can use a wired headset with the phone in a holster (not in your pocket) or place the cellphone in speakerphone mode – either of these solutions should place substantial distance between your head and the transmitter.
